What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is an internal sensation of movement that has no external cause. For instance, while you are standing still you could feel as though you are swaying or as though the room is spinning. Your inner ear and neck are key components that help to maintain your balance. When these components have been altered or damaged it can make you feel dizzy and experience episodes of vertigo.
Common causes of these issues may include:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Migraine and inflammation of the vestibular apparatus
- Low blood pressure, heart disease and low blood sugar
- An injury to the upper cervical spine
- Meniere’s disease

Vertigo Symptoms
While vertigo is categorised as a sensation of movement without cause, there are several other symptoms you may also experience. Below, we’ve listed different symptoms you may experience if you are living with vertigo or a similar condition.
- A sensation of movement/spinning – either from yourself or the environment around you
- Unsteadiness
- Difficulty walking straight
- Light-headedness
- Headaches
- Nausea & vomiting
- Ringing in the ear
- Hearing loss
Vertigo Treatment
We rely on our nervous system to be able to regulate our bodies and move as we see fit. Our vestibular system uses the inner ear to create and monitor our sense of balance and communicate this to the central nervous system.
Experienced chiropractors can use specific techniques to help realign the body and correct any issues with these systems. Common treatments for vertigo include chiropractic adjustments such as spinal realignment, soft tissue therapy and joint mobilisation.
Likewise, manual therapy, epley’s manoeuvre and tailored exercise and strengthening rehabilitation can help to improve mobility and relieve vertigo and dizziness symptoms.
Common Vertigo Questions
How do I know if I need treatment for my vertigo?
If you experience any level of severity of vertigo, chiropractic treatment can be beneficial to your condition
What happens if I leave my vertigo untreated?
While some instances of vertigo may relieve themselves over time, depending on the cause there could be more serious concerns that need to be treated. There are a range of different conditions that can affect your balance and cause vertigo. The severity of a condition or symptom can change depending on your environment or triggers, but ultimately they’ll be recurring unless the underlying cause is addressed.
How are vertigo assessments conducted?
At Northside Chiropractic, we conduct a thorough physical examination to identify the underlying cause of your vertigo. We also conduct balance tests, which will record the muscle movements around your head and upper neck, to determine the severity of your concerns.
After this, we can tailor your chiropractic treatment to address your dizziness and vertigo.
