Upper Cross Syndrome

Upper Cross Syndrome

Jan 4, 2023

One of the posture issues is called Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS). Muscle imbalances in the neck, upper back, chest, and shoulder regions cause it. The tension of the pectoralis major and minor crosses over with the tightness of the upper trapezius and levator scapula.

Common causes of this postural issue include bad posture, inappropriate repeated motions, trauma, and stress.

Upper Cross Syndrome, over time can deteriorate a person’s physical fitness and health. It is responsible for changes in the upper back’s posture and inducing respiratory problems, including asthma. Therefore it is necessary to diagnose and treat this condition before it worsens.

Chiropractic treatment is the best solution for Upper Cross Syndrome. At Northside Chiropractic, we help patients to get relief with the UCS.

Causes and Symptoms of an upper crossed syndrome

Posture correction

Electronic tools such as cell phones, tablets, laptops or desk computers are the devices you spend hours looking at the screen with your head extended forward; this is one of the leading causes of Upper Cross Syndrome.

This postural distortion pattern, an upper crossed syndrome, can result in muscle tone or timing imbalances, often leading to poor movement patterns.

Other symptoms include:

  • Tight neck or neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Upper back pain
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Elevated shoulders
  • Lack of chest and shoulder mobility
  • There may occasionally be tingling, numbness, and soreness in the arms, particularly near the shoulders and pecs.

Muscles Involved In Upper Cross Syndrome

BACK MUSCLES

  • Upper trapezius
  • Lower trapezius
  • Serratus anterior

 NECK MUSCLES

  • Levator scapula
  • Sternocleidomastoid
  • Deep neck flexors

Treatment options for Upper Crossed Syndrome

Chiropractic Care Treatment

Chiropractic therapy is a great technique to treat the underlying reasons of the upper cross syndrome and alleviate symptoms since it addresses muscle imbalance, posture, and the musculoskeletal system.

Stretch even though you could experience some pain or discomfort! It’s crucial to get off to a simple start. A chiropractor is well-versed in the physical treatment and exercises required to treat the upper cross syndrome.

Chiropractic care aims to realign the spine, which helps balance muscle strain, tightness, and weakness and improves posture by relieving pain.

Compared to only workouts and treatment, chiropractic care speeds up your recovery. Your joints will be more aligned following a chiropractic adjustment, allowing the muscles to loosen up and stretch as needed.

Physiotherapy Treatment

In addition to chiropractors, qualified physiotherapists can aid in treating UCS. They create custom programs for their patients. They offer a combination of approaches.

A patient must undergo an evaluation to determine their problem and its causes before beginning a session. The patient will also receive education from a physiotherapist on how to avoid developing UCS in the future. The personalised software also offers suggestions for the state.

Exercises To Prevent Upper Cross Syndrome

exercises for upper cross syndrome

Dynamic Wall Angels

Stand with your feet in front of you and your back against a wall. Keep good posture, and raise your arms against the wall while keeping your core tight and ribcage down.

Your spine should remain neutral even as you raise your arms. Without arching your back, you should be able to raise your arms overhead while maintaining contact with the wall.

Chin Tuck Exercise

The chin tuck is one of the most effective postural exercises for combating neck pain. This exercise strengthens the muscles that bring the head back into alignment over the shoulders.

The chin tuck exercise may be done anywhere, even at a desk at work or while driving. The daily practice of this exercise promotes the formation of healthy postural habits.

Resistance Band Row

Loop is a resistance band around something that is approximately hip height. Keep your posture tall and your elbows in while you use both arms to pull the resistance band toward you.

Squeeze your shoulder edges together, and pull your elbows around. Keep your chest raised and your body engaged. You will need to modify how near to the anchor point you are standing based on the tightness of your resistance band.
