What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractors treat a wide range of conditions that can affect your movement and day-to-day life. A chiropractor examines issues with muscles and joints, using a combination of treatments to manage everyday aches and pains, sports injuries, and conditions such as arthritis. Whether your pain is acute or from a chronic injury or condition, it doesn’t need to linger any longer. Don’t suffer in silence- see a chiropractor for safe and effective treatment.

This blog walks you through the conditions chiropractors can treat and how they can help. For personalised advice, contact our friendly and helpful team at Northside Chiropractic today.

1. Neck Pain

Whether it’s from the increasingly common ‘text neck’ or the effects of working from home at your less than an ergonomic desk, neck pain is… well, a pain in the neck! We’re all leaning our heads forward more often these days and for more extended amounts of time, leading to repetitive stress injuries and muscle strain. While neck pain is undoubtedly uncomfortable, chiropractic care can provide much-needed relief and management. A chiropractor can help with your neck pain by using treatments such as spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, joint mobilisation, or exercise and strengthening rehab.

2. Back Pain

Back pain is a common occurrence and can affect anybody at any age. It can occur in one part of the back, such as the lower back, mid-back or upper back, or a combination of these areas. Back pain has many causes, ranging from overuse and muscle strains to more complex conditions. Even when you think you haven’t used your back, like when you sit all day, your spine is constantly working to keep you upright. And slouching isn’t helping whatsoever— in fact, it’s adding to your discomfort! Chiropractic treatment can help to reduce your pain by using massage, spinal adjustments, strengthening exercises, or joint mobilisation.

3. Headaches and Migraines

Headaches happen to all of us at one time or another, and migraines occur to 20% of the population at some stage in their life. There are many different types of headaches, including tension headaches, cluster headaches, and sinus headaches. All kinds of headaches have differing causes— tension headaches are typically caused by stress, whereas sinus headaches are often caused by sinusitis or seasonal allergies. Our experienced chiropractors are trained in recognising when your pain may need to be referred to another health professional. Chiropractors help by using a variety of treatments, including manual adjustments, activator adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and advising on posture and lifestyle factors that may be contributing.

4. Shoulder Dysfunction/Pain

The shoulder is a complex area and includes all of the surrounding muscles, joints, and ligaments. Poor posture is a common culprit, as are sports injuries and general overuse. Chiropractors assist by evaluating how your spine, shoulder, and elbow work together. They then often use manual adjustments, activator methods, and soft tissue therapy and provide posture advice.

5. Posture

Posture refers to how the body supports muscle tension. Poor posture typically looks like rounded shoulders, forward head posture, and a hump at the base of the neck called dowager’s hump. This can have an impact on all areas of your body. Poor posture can lead to back pain, body aches and pains, muscle fatigue, and headaches. It’s important to correct poor posture as, over time, poor posture can cause spinal dysfunction and joint degeneration. A chiropractor can help by assessing how your body moves, identifying how to improve your posture while decreasing pain and discomfort.

6. Whiplash

Whiplash is a type of neck injury and develops most often after a motor vehicle accident. It can also be caused by any sudden head movement, such as sports or even a fall. The pain from whiplash may start immediately after the injury or take days to appear. Whiplash includes pain and stiffness in the neck, pain that worsens with movement, decreased range of motion, and headaches. If left untreated, whiplash can continue to cause pain months and even years after the injury occurred. Chiropractors will use a variety of treatments such as soft tissue therapy, spinal adjustments, joint mobilisation, and exercise and strengthening rehab to help aid in your recovery.

7. TMJ and Jaw Pain

TMJ is the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull. When this joint is stressed, it can lead to pain and tenderness across your jaw, ear, or face. Sometimes people with TMJ may suspect they have an ear infection, as the ear is just over a centimetre away from the temporomandibular joint. They may also think they have a toothache due to the pain stretching into the jaw. Although the joint is small, it can affect every area of the face, including the cheeks, forehead, and eyes. Chiropractic treatment can assist in relieving jaw muscles by using muscle therapy and activator adjustments.

8. Dizziness & Vertigo

Dizziness and vertigo are typically caused by inner ear and neck issues that make you feel light-headed and unsteady on your feet. A chiropractor can help manage these symptoms by performing manual therapy, tailored treatments, and soft tissue therapy.
